(More customer reviews)I bought these on sale for ~$20 at a hardware store. The light is comparable to a normal "bright white" CFL, and the bulb lights up instantly. I have a few bright white CFL bulbs that blow purple until they warm up - the Healthy CFL does not do that. I've only had the bulb for a day, so I don't have enough experience with it to write about the healthy effects of using it. I'll try to post a follow-up later.

It is a semi-coarse, self supporting filter media embedded with carbon. It cuts easily with boning shears to fit some obsolete or custom blower units. I use it as a secondary filter after a large particle filter and before a HEPA style filter for a continually dusty area. I feel it works well for my situation.

VENTA AIRWASHER LLC #5014436 LW14 GRY Airwasher Review

(More customer reviews)After reading the reviews and seeing several advertisements, I decided to purchase the Venta LW14 for my bedroom. Venta products are German made and considering the 200.00 price tag, you might say they are the Mercedes of Humidifier/Air cleaners. Besides, Venta's advertising claims that Siegfried & Roy as well as Jose` Carreras are customers, so it's got to be good right?
The LW14 uses a very simple and efficient design of a small 2-speed fan that blows across a housing which holds 1.2 gallons of water. In the water housing lies a molded stack of 40 discs. (Picture a stack of your old '45' records all spaced about one tenth of an inch apart.) This 'disc stack' is slowly turned by a plastic gear set which is attached to the bottom of the fan shaft. As the turning wet discs are exposed to the blown fan air, the theory is that, the water will evaporate off the discs into the air and dust particles in the air are attracted to the wet discs and then deposited in the water basin. As dry, dirty air is drawn in through the top, clean and humidified air is blown out the sides of the unit. It is a great yet simple design idea.
The unit does not require any filter pads but instead requires the Venta Treatment Additive every 10-14 days. Each packet contains 1.5 fl oz. and you get two packets in the box to start. Replacements come in a box of 10 packets for about 17.00 and can be purchased at Bed & Bath or on-line through Venta or other sources. I can state from experience, that the unit will hardly evaporate any water without using this additive. According to Venta's user guide, the additive contains `wetting' and `softening' agents that make the water 'sheet' off the discs instead of 'bead' off. They also state that the additive prevents calcium and lime build up making the unit easier to clean and that it helps eliminate odors and bacteria in the water basin as well. You should refill the basin daily and then rinse it out completely and refill every 10-14 days with fresh water and an additive packet. Venta states that every six months the unit should get a through cleaning with another chemical the sell, Venta Cleaner(15.00 per bottle, one bottle needed per cleaning). Venta adds that a solution of vinegar and water can be used in place of the special cleaner.
I purchased the LW14 several weeks ago from a local Bed Bath & Beyond Store. During unpacking, I noticed a small black piece of broken plastic. I could not find anything broken at first so I took this as a piece of assembly 'flash' as found when building plastic models. I ran the unit from 7PM to 7AM in my bedroom for three nights. On the third night, I heard a clicking noise that I found emanated from the plastic gear set that turns the disc stack. I called Venta directly and the representative advised me to swap the unit out at Bed & Bath so I did so.
Oddly, the second new unit had the same mysterious plastic piece in the bottom of the box. I ran the second unit, and after a few days, I again noticed the clicking noise. Further inspection also revealed a broken plastic top latch. This was the mysterious plastic `piece' but did not explain the recurrence of the click noise. This latch is a part of Venta's '1 Click' design that makes the top motor housing easy to open for cleaning. I called Venta and they were great. They stated that this latch was part of the fan motor so they sent me out a new fan motor as well as a new gear set to cure the click noise.
Now I installed the replacement fan motor, but strangely, I found that it was much louder and spun much faster, on both speeds, as the initial two units. With this new faster replacement fan, I found it was too loud to have in my bedroom, even on the low speed setting. I called Venta again to inquire. The Venta representative was surprised and did not realize that the replacement fans were faster and louder than the fans that the units are shipped with right out of the box.
In any event, I decided to reinstall the initial fan with the broken latch, that came with the second unit, and I paired it up with the replacement gear set which eliminated the click noise.
I have an expensive humidity monitor in my bedroom and I have seen an increase in humidity from 40% to 52% with the LW14 running on low speed all night. Oddly, the unit is only losing about an inch of water in this time period. (Venta claims that the LW14 can use all 1.2 gallons of water in a 24-hour period in dry rooms.)
To Summarize: The LW14 does humidify well and I believe it is also cleaning the air as advertised. Gear noise, inferior plastic pieces are an issue as well as inconsistent replacement parts. I don't believe these problems should exist on a 200.00 German made humidifier. The customer service is very professional and the unit has a 10-year warranty. I have decided to keep the unit even with these service issues.

Frigidaire FAD251NTD 25 Pint Dehumidifier, White Review

(More customer reviews)This if my first experience with a dehumidifier. The rapid dry just wasn't cutting it in the new apartment/new city. I use this to reduce the humidity in a 700+ square foot apartment from the 60's to the 40's. It works. The handle rattles slightly so making it as quiet as it can be took a tiny bit of effort. The water collection bin needs to be emptied once every day or two depending on how long it runs and the humidity. It's too loud to have in the same room to watch tv - but does an okay job keeping the apartment under 50% just running it during the day while we're at work. Turning the humidity dial down doesn't decrease the noise level.
Wish I didn't need to use one.

My husband put these light bulbs in our house - one in the bedroom and two in the main living areas. Within a week my symptoms were almost completely gone. We leave the bedroom light on a few hours during the day and off at night. It costs almost nothing to run because it's an energy efficient bulb. What a relief!! Cheaper and longer lasting than antihistamines . . . and with no side effects. Gotta LOVE it!

When we left the house and let it run on the O3 sanitation mode for about an hour or more we would return to a perfect air - you can small the ozone some but when the setting is not on high it just smells like freah clean air.
This is the most amazing air filter. Mine still works to even get indian curry and strong garlic out of the kitchen. I wish my whole HVAC system was hooked to this somehow. BUY THIS. YOU WON'T REGRET IT. I've had mine for 5 years. It makes sprays like Febreze totally useless.

Hunter 83001 Riazzi Bathroom Fan with Light and Nightlight, Brushed Nickel Review

(More customer reviews)I was searching for an attractive replacement for my previous bathroom light/fan combo that had a decidedly utilitarian look. I found that Hunter makes the best selection of decorative light/fan units, and this one has the most powerful fan of all the ones they offer. I was concerned that the fan might be too loud, but I got this one anyway because I needed a fan that would really move air well since we were having trouble with condensation and mildew in the bathroom. I was pleased to find that noise is not a problem at all. The fan is actually quieter than my old fan, and it is much more powerful. When I am in the bathroom I can hear it running, but it is not loud enough to be bothersome. Outside in the hallway, I don't notice the sound. It does its job of drying out the bathroom after a shower very well.
I have two relatively minor points of criticism. (1) When the light is on, you can clearly see the shadows of brackets and other internal parts of the fan through the glass band that runs along the side of the unit. This is not aesthetically pleasing. Perhaps if the side glass was thicker, the shadows would have a fuzzier, more diffuse appearance and would be less noticeable. (2) We were not able to use the nightlight function because we only have two switches on the wall and we didn't want to run new wiring in the bathroom. Rarely do I see a bathroom with three wall switches, so I suspect others may find this to be a problem as well. We could have chosen to wire the nightlight so that it would come on with either the fan or the main light, but it was hard to see what the benefit of that would be. A nice addition would be an electronic eye that turns the nightlight on when the room is dark.

Amaircare 3000 Portable HEPA Air Cleaner Review

(More customer reviews)I've been a user of this unit for just about 10 years now. Could not be happier with it. It has never let me down, has never stopped working, and I use it every day. I've only had to replace the HEPA filter twice - which is relatively rare given how long I run this thing and how long I've had it.
The only units that might be better than this are the $900-range ones, so for the price you won't find better. I'll buy this again all day long if I had to. Given how long this has lasted me, my total costs of ownership on this keep lowering every year it continues to run. It just doesn't die!
A real test was recently I had moved and while living temporarily in furnished housing, I did not unpack my Americare 3000 since I knew I was in transition and would be in a new residence soon. I had miserable allergies and my nose was stuffed-up every night. I went to the storage unit to retrieve it, and the next day (after letting it run all night), I was instantly feeling better. I even slept better the following night, nose was not congested, no allergies.
Best $500 investment I've ever made, bar-none.

Pure Guardian H1000 TableTop Humidifier Review

(More customer reviews)I was very disappointed with this product. Initially, it appeared to be exactly what I was looking for. A small, attractive, filterless humidifier for a baby nursery that had natural antimicrobial properties.
Prior to purchasing, I read a number of online reviews. Like most products, there were mixed results, but overall the impressions seemed positive. I had read a review by Paul here who claimed that the product didn't work. I assumed his review was hyperbole. Turns out Paul was right. It just plain doesn't work.
We ran this humidifier in our baby's nursery for 16 hours straight (refilling so the tank was never empty). In 16 hours, the humidity went from 33% to 34% !?!? It just plain doesn't work.
Now, I should also state some obvious stuff. We used the product in what should have been an appropriate environment. The room is very small 9'x9' and the door was closed to eliminate loss of humidity. Also, my experience can not be explained away as a single faulty unit. I had ordered two (another for the master bedroom), so we retested with a second model with identical results. Both produced a visible mist immediately above the unit, so they were 'working'.
This product has great features in theory. I was excited by the nano silver technology which in theory should make for a clean and low maintenance experience.
I returned this product and purchased a well known brand. While it didn't have all the flashy features of this Germ Guardian, it just plain works. I installed it 10 minutes ago and the room humidity has climbed more than 5%.
Bottom line. This product doesn't work. If you plan to purchase it despite these warnings, make sure you keep your receipt for the return.

Bionaire LC0760 HEPA Air Cleaner Review

(More customer reviews)This product is very well constructed. It has two speeds, low and high. The low speed is pretty much quiet enough to sleep with. The Bionaire LC-0760 is a good choice to remove any small particles that are very annoying.
Although I'm not totally knowledgable on air purifiers and the technology behind it (ionization, etc.) but I'm certainly happy with this one. It removed almost all of the dust in the room it was placed. I was sick and tired of having to dust all the furniture in the room so I got an air purifier. After getting one and I dusted for the last time. There are two computers in the room and the computer cases are modded with many fans around the side so I have to watch out for dust more than normal computer users have to as dust damages your expensive hardware. However, with this air purifier, I didn't have to worry about dust getting into my system at all. It's a great investment.
