(More customer reviews)I'm one of those folks who can only sleep with "white noise" in the background. I used to use big Lasko box fans, but the cheap plastic blades on those would eventually weaken and flap around, making a roaring sound. Plus the poorly designed and made screws that held the grills in place would eventually weaken and cause the grill to bang against the metal box, making a tapping sound all night long the would wake the dead.
I was a little nervous about getting this fan as I'd only been used to huge box fans, and this one seemed too efficient and quiet to make a real difference in the air and making "white noise" to fall asleep to. I actually purchased it at Bed Bath and Beyond (not Amazon) for $100, so I'm not sure if there is lower price out there somewhere. Anyway, I wanted to try it at home to see what I thought, thinking if I didn't like it I could return it.
The fan was incredibly easy to put together, and you can make it two different heights ... short near-the-floor height, or "my bedroom is so hot I need a fan blowing right on me as I lay in bed" height.
On low, you can barely hear that the fan is on, however it moves about as much air as a big box fan does on high. When the Vornado is on high, it makes a pleasing white-noise sound, and REALLY moves the air around in the whole room. It's easy to adjust to point it where you want the air to go. I point it at the upper corner of my room so the air bouces off and travels everywhere else ... it really works!
The grill is extremely easy to remove (no screws at all ... just four secure clips), and the fan blade slides right off the shaft (no screw there, either). This will make it simple to clean just under the faucet in the sink or bathtub when it inevitably gets dusty and dirty.
If you are looking for a whole room circulator or a white-noise sleep aid, I couldn't recomment any fan higher! Good quality construction and well-engineered thought went into every aspect of this product. You won't go wrong.
Update 3/21/2009 - Fan has worked flawlessly since I purchased it. The back grill doesn't come off and must be cleaned by wiping a cloth inside and out. There is a small screw that holds the base together that works loose sometimes, but it's easy enough to tighten with a screwdriver. Almost the perfect design ... I still recommend!

(More customer reviews)I recently purchased this unit to supplement my Vornado AQS-15 because of ongoing allergy problems. I had some reputable mold inspectors in the other day and they did output readings on both machines. The Rabbit Air 421A let through more than twice as much particulate matter as did the simple and much less expensive Vornado ($119) which has only a hepa and a pre-filter. The discrepancy was so extreme that we all thought it must be a mistake and they repeated the readings with the same results.
I asked them what they would recommend for multi-filter multi-function purifier--they suggested BlueAir.

(More customer reviews)I have central air, but my bedroom upstairs is usually 5-10 degrees warmer than the other bedrooms (vaulted ceiling). This product works perfectly even though the room is much larger than 250sq ft.This portable AC only costs 50 cents a day to run, considerably less than running the central air. It's quieter than I expected and the air is very cold. The only thing I don't like is the instruction manual - just not enough info.The exhaust hose must be mounted properly to the outside through a window. All portable AC units create a vacuum in the room and if the exhaust hose is not practically air tight, more warm air from outside will come in than cold air blowing out. I have had it for a week now and it has yet to need the water reservoir emptied.

(More customer reviews)We've had this model for about a year now. It's a high quality product. Even on the highest setting, it's still softer than our cool mist vaporizer on its low setting. The warranty is unbeatable. It's super easy to care for. The filter is very accessible. My husband has terrible sinus problems and this machine has been keeping him medication free since we purchased it. You can sign up for an automatic filter replacement program where the new filter is delivered automatically when it's time to change (every six months is recommended in order to maintain the 10 year warranty). It's costly, but worth it compared to the junk that you can buy in an average retail store. You can tell as soon as you open it that it's built to last.

Blueair Medical Pro with VOC Filter Review

(More customer reviews)Solid choice based on the 402 with an upgraded motor more powerful that that found in current (2010) model 400 series units. Lose a point for an ion brush plate with four brushes versus the seven brushes found in current 400 series models. Despite what the directional airflow arrow on the VOC filter denotes, install the filter with the prefilter side (it is not a carbon postfilter) facing the ion brushes. All three units I haved tested emit airflow noise akin to rustling turbulence when used with the VOC filter. Unit also supports the use of Particle 402PF and SmokeStop 402SF filters. Why the MD Pro over IQAir at this price range? Size, overall decibel levels at comparable airflow ratings, power consumption (important when running the unit 24/7) and a superior warranty (10 years versus 5 years). Annual filter costs averaged over a five year period also favor the MD Pro (single MDPROVOCF filter with a 12-month filter life). Why not the MD Pro over IQAir at this price range? Degradation of filter efficiency due to loss of electrostatic activity as the filter media clogs, fewer pounds of carbon in the filter, some bypass of unfiltered air which accumulates on the exposed fan and motor of the MD Pro and vacuum maintenance requirements. FYI, I own multiple MD Pro units as well as an IQAir HeathPro Plus and am fully satisfied with them all.

Someone suggested this purchase, and I was skeptical but was in desperate need of relief. An air purifier has made all the difference in my ability to breathe. I only have one for the bedroom, but will get one in the future for the downstairs, too. The company I used to order, Best Filters, was also quite accommodating. Austin sent the wrong color, but BF corrected the problem immediately (within two hours of my email) arranging for the correct color, and then easy pick up of the other unit. I would highly recommend both!

(More customer reviews)Have used several less expensive HEPA filters in the past with less than stellar results - the Blueair 501 cleans the air more thoroughly - I would wake up occasionally coughing before (most likely due to pet dander) - have not had this happen since running the purifier at night on setting "4" of 5. I also have a neighbor who's second-hand smoke sometimes drifts in through the pipe fittings - the smell has disappeared, too. This unit is more expensive but it's worth it - am very satisfied!

(More customer reviews)While it's difficult to directly measure the effect that this air filter is having on the environment with any degree of certainty without tools to measure air quality it certainly seems to me to be doing a good job. I wake up feeling better, and my sinuses have stopped giving me trouble. I'm able to breathe much better, and through both nostrils, consistently; it's been so long since I could do that I'd forgotten what it was like. I believe I'm even sleeping better because of it. And it is QUIET, on the low setting I dare say silent. I kept looking at the blue light to be sure it was on. The only complaint: I got the activated carbon filter and, apparently during shipping, some of the black dust got into the container an left noticeable black marks on a few places on the outside of the filter case. I haven't found any cleaner that will take them off yet, very stubborn. Oh, and the shipping was kind of slow.

It's amazing to see how dirty the filter is when it is time to change the filters - kind of like when you empty a vacuum cleaner bag. It's hard to believe there is so much stuff in the air. I have found it much easier to replace the filter every 6 months than having to clean a filter weekly. The unit is a bit loud on the highest fan speed setting and found it works best to run it on speed 3 or 4 before I go to sleep and then lower it to speed 1 or 2. On the lower fan speed settings it sounds more like white noise and after a couple days of running the unit I forgot it was on.

Alen Tower Air Purifier - T300 Review

I have pretty bad allergies, and when we first moved into this house it had brand new carpet and I would be miserable 5 minutes after walking in the door. I moved my T300 in from my previous apartment, and about a day later came back and had no allergy symptoms whatsoever.
PROS: -Cleans extremely well.
-Filters last longer than 6 months.
-Quiet on lower settings
CONS: -Have noticed a problem with the back cover. It takes some work to get the unit to recognize that the back cover is installed. Customer service told me I could adjust the sensor for it but haven't tried yet.
-Lamps are ridiculously expensive. Don't last. Don't buy them for sixty bucks! Get the Phillips PL5/UV at bulbman(dot)com for thirteen bucks! Its better and is the exact bulb specs for the T300...
-Noisy on "medium" and "high"

(More customer reviews)I bought six of these filters in Dec 08 and they are fake. They have different markings on them from the original BlueAir filters. The filter media is also oriented up-to-down instead of left-to-right. The width is 1/8-inch shorter so there is a gap when you put them into the machines. And hold the filter up to a light and you can see through the filter!!! There is no carbon in them. DO NOT BUY THESE - RIP OFF!!!

They all proved to be ineffective, noisy, ugly, and/or overpriced. The Bio Fresh works for me. None of the others did. I enjoy the several different modes of cleaning available. It is an attractive machine that fits nicely against a wall. Everything about it is well thought-out. It is well worth the money. I just purchased my second Bio Fresh air cleaner and it was delivered earlier than expected. It has helped my breathing more than all the antihistamines, inhalers, and all the other machines combined.

(More customer reviews)The Blueair company is a wonderful company to work with and helped settle my issues. I ordered 2 of the 501 units with replacement filters sight unseen based on user reviews. This is a very quality built unit, but the speed settings on the fan are far from usable. The lower speeds barely move enough air, yet the high speed is so noisy that you will think a tornado is in the room with you. The company gladly exchanged my 2 501 units with the 400 series units. The 401 units are far quieter and way more efficient in the way in which it moves the air, so order the 401, you can't go wrong. Keep in mind the 10 year warranty is only applicable if you can prove that you purchased and changed the filters every six months, if not no warranty exists, and the filters are not free, but affordable. In my opinion the 401 is the way to go, stay clear of the 501's due to the noise and air flow design, the Blueair company is second to none in customer support and are highly recommended. Thanks Blueair for helping me get it right....This is one heck of a company that will take care of it's customers. Also keep in mind when you order a Blueair purifier unit, one filter set will come included with the applicable unit that you order. If you order filters, they will be used later for replacements, I wasn't sure when I ordered if the filters were included but they were.

IQAir HealthPro Plus HEPA Air Purifier - Air Cleaner with with Gas and Odor Filter - HyperHepa Technology Review

(More customer reviews)After 1 month of use, this IQAir unit earns my highest recommendation. I researched air purifiers for about a week before buying two IQAir units, one with the odor filter (Pro-Plus), and one without (Pro) to help with allergies and asthma symptoms that my family suffers from. Both of them work absolutely perfectly, with significant symptom relief within the first week of use. The packaging was very secure, with each unit contained in double boxes similar to what you find with high-end stereo equipment, including thick styrofoam inserts for cushioning. The unpacked units were sparkling new and clean, with an inspection page that detailed the performance actual performance for my unit at each of the five individual speeds. The manual was nicely organized and easy to comprehend.
These are sturdy units that are somewhat heavy, but come with a convenient handle recessed on the top, as well caster wheels (which are optional to install) to roll the unit if you need to move it periodically. The manual recommends clearance of at least 12 inches on all sides for optimal performance, so keep this in mind for placement in your room. It is noisy at the highest setting, but works very effectively at quieter settings 2 or 3 in my 13' x 16' room. I also use an IQAir unit in a 20 x 20 room, and it cleans the air very well at setting 3. My son noticed so much improvement in his allergies and breathing after just two days of use, that when I moved the unit to another room for a night, he begged me to return it to his bedroom. We went on vacation for a few days, and he said that he could not wait to get back home because he missed the IQAir purifier.
If you are comparing the units with and without the odor filter, even the one without the odor filter leaves the air smelling fresh and clean. In fact, for the first week, the one with the odor filter had a bit of a peculiar smell to it, which might have been coming from the odor filter itself. Unless you have a really significant odor problem, you can save the extra $100 that you pay for the "Pro-Plus" over the "Pro" model. The units look identical from the outside, and you can order a retrofit assembly from the IQAir if you later want to convert your "Pro" to "Pro Plus." Each unit has a remote that is slightly larger than a credit card, which is very convenient if I want to change the setting after I get into bed.
In summary, these IQAirs are well worth the price, which isn't as much as it seems after you factor in the yearly filter replacement cost, which is lower than most other brands. I wish that I had discovered IQAir years ago, before wasting my money on other air purifiers. I am so impressed that I am about to order a third IQAir to use in my office. I have previously owned the following air purifiers, none of which came anywhere close to my IQAir units: Oreck XL Air8D, Oreck XL 4000, Holmes (various sizes), Honeywell (the largest big round one), Sharper Image (Ionic Breeze). I hated cleaning the Oreck units, which were overpriced, and their replacement filters were also very expensive on a yearly basis. The Orecks also left a lot of dust all around them. The motor burned out on my large Oreck unit just after the two year warranty expired. The Honeywell filter was also very expensive, and the unit was extremely noisy. The Holmes units were ok for very small rooms, but had to be on the noisiest high setting to notice any air cleaning, had flimsy construction, and required frequent filter changes. The Sharper Image units were basically useless, as they did not improve the air quality or our allergy symptoms; they went back to the store after three weeks.
